Cake and Gin

Mananged 6 individual bottles of Sloe Gin yesterday. The only negative is that I don't really like the stuff but it will do nicely for pressies and the like. The Westmorland Pepper Cake looked a little 'flat' after it left the oven but I have to say that it tasted perfect. Will certainly make this one again

Update

Obviously the blog posts have been non-existant and I am sure that I have written this before but I am determined to keep posting regularly from now on and with the provision (finally) of a working digital camera I hope to add some pics. Well, here is the news from Church Farm Cottage

Hens

Dora has had a particularly heavy moult of late but is now back in full feather but not laying. The other two are laying one a day every day so all is good. I am really keen on getting Quail in the spring but I have a feelign that in the interest of marital bliss that might not happen.........

Rabbit

We now have a male Rabbit, Derek, joing the 4 guinea pigs in the garden. I say joining but he is occupying his own hand built hutch, courtesy of yours truly. Managed to cobble one together using an old run and a few scraps and bit and bods. Nearly a full days work on Sunday (if you include a lunchtime pint at The Bricklayers Arms mid afternoon)

Garden

Never really dabbled with fruit apart from a bad experience with Strawberries last year. I have planted a cane of Redcurrant and Tayberry recently and I will see how we go - Nothing ventured and all that

Spent a hour or so last night sowing. Have a tray each of Plum Roma, Gardeners Delight and Red Cherry Tomatoes together with Chilli (Cayenne) and Cucumber.

I also purchased a couple of bags of Shallot sets and one Onion set from our friends at Poundland. We'll see how they go but they appear to be a really good quality. As I was woefully short of Tomato seeds I also purchased a multi pack of seeds for a quid. As well as the Plum Roma it has Courgette, Aubergine, Rocket, Oregano and Peppers (Traffic Light)to boot. If the germination rate is OK then Poundland will get a thumbs up from me.

Other things on the agenda are tracking down some spuds this weekend, namely Suttons Foremost. Had a really good crop of these last year and keen to give them another go. The other things that we are planning include Runner Beans, Broad Beans and Peas. I am also having a bash at some container grown Salad Onions (Red Beard), Parsnips and Carrot. I will also be planting LOTS of Mixed Salad leaves and Herbs (space permitting)

Kitchen

I have a crock full of Sloe Gin that needs decanting. I will be bottling this tonight. Special thanks to Gary at Thornton Working Mens Club for the donation of empty Stowells single serve wine bottles. Perfect.

Tonight I am also knocking up a Westmorland Pepper Cake, which essentially is a fruit cake with ground cloves and black pepper. Assuming it turns out I'll bung the recipe on tonight/tomorrow.
